Motivation towards the foreign language (English) and regional language (Basque) in immersion schools: Does CLIL in the foreign language make a difference?

Motivation to learn languages strongly correlates with language achievement, and the school context has a great influence on motivation of young learners (YLs). A key rationale for implementation content integrated learning (CLIL) programs, therefore, was pupil motivation. Very few studies have measured in this context, especially primary schools. Even fewer done so bilingual areas, where continuation widespread use regional often depends its presence system CLIL reduces presence. To address these gaps, towards foreign (FL), English, language, Basque, 399 YLs English (aged 10–12 years) Basque immersion The were divided into group ( n = 230), as (EFL) lessons, non-CLIL 169), which received only EFL lessons. Results showed that had more positive attitude slightly lower Basque. This suggests increasing amount exposure (FL) via lessons improves but could decrease instrumental language.
